Beth asks Terry: what would you do with a time machine?

Terry answers:

Thanks for asking. First, an important point: A time machine travels in
time, not in space. So, if you're going way back prior to good ground
and air transport, you better ship your time machine to the location first.
I'd like to see The Great Pyramid when it was fresh and new, encased in
white limestone, its Grand Opening Day. I'd like to visit Machu Picchu a
few months before it was deserted. And I'd like to put my time machine
on, what, 5th floor Dallas Book Depository and observe Oswald's prep
and actions. And again on the Grassy Knoll. I don't know anything about
the future, but I'd like to take a chance and visit L.A. in, say, 500 hundred
years. And I'd like to be nearby to observe some of our early humanoid forms
at work and play. I'd like to meet the girl who invented the walking stick.
I'd like to watch Eric Sate composing. Stuff like that, lots of stuff.

Simon
colored words
colored words
This is an homage to my tailor Simon,
who died suddenly last week.
Died. Not "passed away".
colored words
There they were, watching the Oscars, he and Dolly.
He went to the kitchen to get a glass of water
and his brain exploded.
Poof.
colored words
Married to his wife for 35 years.
She said it was almost impossible to find a solo photo of him for
the funeral, since they were together in almost all photographs.
Which sure says a lot about their relationship....
colored words
She ran into the kitchen, called 911, then tried to tend to him.
She said that she tried to cradle him in her arms,
but he was rigid, because of his brain seizure.
This was what she wanted: she wanted to cradle him.
What a profound confession.
How someone can be so lost and in pain and so poignant and lyrical
at the same time is staggering.
colored words
He was immediately gone.
In the kitchen getting a glass of water after the Oscars.
colored words
He was in the hospital for two days, on life support. She cried as she
told me, almost to herself: He looked the same.
He looked the same as always.
colored words
It is difficult to internally *locate* and communicate how I feel
losing someone who was such a part of the flow of my life -
Someone I have known for years and years, but who was not
"a friend". Suddenly...gone.
colored words
When I walked in the shop and no one was there,
I just assumed he was hiding and would jump up.
He would do stuff like this -
he was like a Russian Charlie Brown, striped shirts and all...
colored words
When Dolly came in, she stood looking at me for a while,
as if she was considering exactly how to deliver this news.
There was a sort of surprise in her voice, that matched
the surprise I felt at hearing her say this - of course,
it made no sense - to either of us. She must have told
hundreds of people at this point, and she still sounded surprised.
colored words
I do know that I don't have an article of clothing that has not
passed through Simon's hands. He and I hugged and argued
constantly. And yet I feel guilty somehow, like I should not be allowed
to grieve for him because I was not "major" in the constellation of his life.
colored words
This might seem inconsequential to some, but aren't these relationships
such a large part of the fiber of our lives? These relationships that we
disinclude from the "relationship" category - they are the ones that bring
all the subtle shading.

Crate & Barrel hilarity

profoundly irritating doublespeak....

Next stop for them: politics.

Some examples:

* Inspired by nature, created by Thai artisans. (!)
* Modern primitive shapes.
* A very mid-century shape in very now colors
* Who says clean, simple, straightforward modern
can't be warm and cozy too?
* Brings refined ethnic texture to serving or display.
* Forget everything you ever thought about heavy,
traditional cotton velvet.
* This Zen inspired tray is open to individual interpretation.
