moral quantities


Moral absolutes have to be built into the system
at some point. When we consider the consequences
of our actions, the ethical nature of the acts themselves
is an integral part of the state of affairs we create.
For example, lying to one's spouse to conceal adultery
might keep them happy, but doing so degrades the
relationship further....Moral quantities, such as honesty
or human rights, for example, must be counted along
with such things as pleasure and happiness in an ethical
calculus, for we cannot achieve true happiness at the
cost of our moral self-respect.
